Complications Ensue

Nancy Meyers has a knack for tapping into the pulse of women of a certain age and packaging in a way that is heartfelt, true, and hilarious for all ages (and genders, but mostly women).  Such is the case with her new film It's Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin.  Streep and Baldwin play ex-spouses who have been divorced for 10 years.  He's moved on to a younger wife and she's succeeded in her career, but is having empty nesting pains as her third child leaves the coop.  Complications ensue when the exes get together again during their son's graduation.  He thinks he's rediscovered love and wants to get back together, she doesn't know what it means, especially since she's also attracted to Martin's character who is more recently divorced.  You can see how this is all rich fodder for family dysfunction and comedy.  Streep seems like she's really having fun at this point in her career and Baldwin has perfected the clueless rogue.  The only draw back is that their kids are so perfect it's almost sickening.  But I guess that was a way to highlight the parental discord.  Anyway, its a pleasant film to watch during a pleasant afternoon.
