Chico & Rita

I'm not typically a fan of cartoons, but I was extremely interested in checking out Chico & Rita which was nominated this past year for an Oscar in the feature animation category. It's a love story set primarily  in Havana prior to the revolution and in New York.  Chico and Rita are Afro-Cubans who are brought together through their love of music--Chico's a piano man and Rita sings.  Of course, like most star-crossed lovers, their love is beset by obstacles, including fame, betrayal and distance, which push them apart and bring them together again.  Of course the film is infused with Latin and traditional jazz featuring a soundtrack composed by Bebo Valdes.  And jazz greats make animated cameos--Tito Puente, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie just to name a few. A sweet indulgence with a Latin beat.

Now playing in Atlanta at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.
